Spectre and Meltdown were recently in the new again but not for the reason you might think... Does the latest patch affect Skunkworks in Windows 10 compared to Windows 8.1?

I need to clarify something. The last update applies to Skunkworks before I permanently disabled them was June of 2016, before spectre patches were even a thing. So this should shed some light on why we did this test. I thought I mentioned that but I guess I didn’t

For some x99 chips the windows 10 security patch/upgrade for Spectre & Meltdown disabled my bios clock settings, like the settings were there in bios but cpu-z was reporting stock clock speeds. Anyone who is noticing a major slowdown after that update may want to double check and see if their overclock settings are still being applied in Windows. I would buy be surprised to find out that some people suffering huge performance drops are suffering from their CPU running at stock settings.

^ I would recommend a full windows re-install if you haven't already done that. Windows is a messy OS which can massively wreck things at times when H/W changes or etc so fresh install fixes most of it.

30fps drop @TheTeaCupKiller? No. Something else is wrong with your system. Spectre patches don't cause that big a performance drop

Jay, I don't see why you would want to do this, but I'll humor you. My PC hardware specs are as follows. CPU: Intel Core i5 750 @ 2.67GHz GPU: AMD Radeon HD 5750 1 GB RAM RAM: 8 GB DDR3 Cooling system: Air cooled I believe those are all the main important factors. (Apologies if not, I'm still a little new to the PC Gaming world.) Note: The game I was trying to play was Dark Souls Remastered. Pre-update I was hitting the 60 FPS mark, in full screen, lowest settings, no problem. Post-update I have to keep all the settings at low, and play in windowed mode. If I don't, my frame rate is literally cut in half to 30 FPS. I'm not going to lie I thought my GPU had more or less died on me. Also, if you do decide to do this I'm very curious as to what your results will be. I think my situation was honestly a fluke. P.S. Thank you for all the advice and work you put into doing your videos. They are very helpful, and very much appreciated.

I haven't checked every comment to see if someone else said so, but the Windows update security patch disables overclocking in at least some Broadwell E chips/boards. The settings will be there in bios, but the actual clock speeds will be stuck at stock.

The funny Part is, my 3570k gain Points, with the Windows update. Now i have nearly the Points from 200Mhz more. 4,1Ghz 554 Points up to 577 Points. 4,3Ghz 585 Points up to 598 Points, wich is nearly the Points from 4,5Ghz. Board is the Asus P8Z77 V-LX with the newest Bios. I have no idea whats going on. And on both systems, the SpectreMeltdownCheck from ashampoo says its save.

I speculate (pun intended) that you did not observe the slowdown caused by the update due to the workflow you tested. Spectre has to do with speculative execution, which as far as I can imagine, Cinebench does not use a branching factor which would expose this feature. I don't know how these programs work under the hood, but I'd think a workflow more like video editing would better showcase this.

... Cinebench is like the worst benchmark you can imagine for testing Spectre and Meltdown performance hits. It is a pure mathematical calculation. You wont also have no impact in games, why should you? The hits come where you have I/O operations. My Ivy Bridge ultrabook is garbage now, it is like 60% slower in daily usage, CPU is always 100% in situations like opening Chrome, virus scan ect. This is also why I did no Microcode updates on all my tablets, horrible idea.

My 3rd gen i5 had a small but noticeable slowdown after the patches. It wasn't a huge difference but you can tell the CPU has lost a bit of it's "snappiness" during CPU heavy activities. Gibson Research (the Spin-Right and Shields-Up guy) has a utility called InSpectre that allows you to disable and enable the patches so you can test the differences.

Vor 5 MonateTechTime
The patch punishment is really noticable on slower mobile processors, like a Microsoft Surface with an i3 processor and only 4bg of ram. Any scenario where the processor peaks combined with the system forced to the swap file due to limited ram sees a very noticable performance hit.

Jay if I understand correctly, the main deficit with Spectre and Meltdown is i/o throughput, you probably should have checked you ssd transfer speeds and iops too. I mean, I get it, the main purpose was to test for deficits in gaming, not necessarily fully benchmark Spectre and Meltdown patches in a deep dive.

On my 8700k I think my cinebench score took more of a hit from a upgraded BIOS revision that had microcode update than from any windows patchs. I'm too lazy to reflash the bios to an older bios that I dont intend to run in the future to prove it so... maybe it did, maybe it didnt. I just know my cinebench score dropped from a repeatable avg of around 1675 to a repeatable avg of around 1610, so about 4% drop..... not horrible.

Let me laugh 24/7 about you...xD Sorry to disappoint you: But even Smartphone-processors (yes, ARM Cortex A53 seems to be affected by Spectre now as well, unlike thought in january 2018 first) are affected by this Problem...There aren`t "easy" things or ways you can do or where you can go now.It all comes down to the AI built into These cpus the last 5 years. Hackers simply have learned to predict the result of These ai-circuits. Hackers have learned to use These Features for their own purposes...and the more $HIT AMD/Intel/ARM will be putting into These circuits, the more $HIT is gonna happen from hackers since they will find ways to use it against you.Now it´s too late.

Really annoys me because my system was still keep pace for gaming right up until then, i see anywhere for 10-30% less performance. For instance Overwatch would run (max settings 1080p) 130-150 FPS without issue, since the patch it sits 90-120 fps for the most part, but games like Fallout 4 took a bigger hit, pre patch i would maintain around 50-60 fps in downtown (with medium shadows and disabled god rays) and post patch i see as low as 25 fps with the same settings. AMD doesn´t have spectre-protection for anything right now...AMD is 2nd choice and currently not really tested against Spectre-flaws dude...xDSo: In short: You aren´t safe. AMD just isn´t tested yet. And many spectre-flaws weren´t "patched" for AMD-cpus yet. They simply don`t care.

Try this test with windows 7, I never used windows 8 or 8.1 long, because the performance was worse then windows 7. But i did see on a i7 3770k, i7 6700k, i7 8700k with a GTX 1060 6gb that the difference in performance from windows 7 compared to windows 10 it is a drop of 10 to 30 fps when in most A title games and with benchmarking like fire strike. I can run high to ultra under windows 7 were as to get the same fps in windows 10 i have to go to med to high settings. Second thing i see is that some hardware just will never get stable under windows 10 even if you bought the laptop or hardware that is suppose to run windows 10 or has it pre installed it just not stable, keeps crashing. Most of these were like z170 systems that had these problems were as the 1 gen older and the new z270 and 370 seem to work ok with windows 10 most of the time. Lets be honest windows 8 was a disaster just like 2000 and ME. Windows 8.1 was just a fix to get it to run a bit better, but it still never got to the same level of performance you get form a windows 7 ultra 64bit. So yeah, i wonder if you are willing to test this ! window 7 vs windows 10 gaming and cpu preformance.

the effects of spectre and meltdown were more commonly seen on hedt and xeon platforms rather than consumer chips, and more so in server and workstation based workflows, not general gaming and media. I would say build a little nas and see if there's a change in the performance of downloading a file to it, rendering it out and then reuploading it. I think that's where you'll see the most change.

Hmm, I wonder how big of a impact it would have on a i5-2500k, currently using Intel HD 3000 graphics on windows 7 home 64 bit, but should hopefully be able to get my mobo replaced next week or the week after to hopefully use my GTX 780 again & I might get a cheap ssd & try to upgrade to windows 10 using my 7 key if possible while I'm at it.

my 8600k is slower in cinebench (with higher clock than before) 4.9 Ghz a half year ago (on a 2 years running windows 10 partition) around 1215 CB now (even freshly installed windows) at 4.9 GHz i get 1150 and with 5.1 Ghz 1213 CB

Yes it does. And electron migration isn't just a voltage-thing.It happened to my Intel Q6600 as well which i oc'ed @ 3 Ghz Which i used 5 years 24/7 for gaming & business (2007-2017). And remember: That cpu ran @ 0.8 volts & was produced in 45nm. Today's 22/14nm cpus die much faster & will require more voltage in just 2 years. In 5 years your cpu will be dead if you use it heavily. After 1-2 years you'll just need more voltage.A Q6600 cpu from 2006 easily lasts 10 years for heavy gaming/encoding. A today's cpu wll only last 5 years, dude. An Intel Pentium 1 @300 mhz easily will run for~20 years dude. And a Z80-cpu @ 10 mhz will last ~100 years...Notice a pattern? More mhz = worse lifetime. More mhz means advanced electronmigration as well. And high temperature. That's because @ more mhz/ghz, your cpu's electrons flow faster.Faster flow = faster electronmigration, dude. @ 5Ghz your cpu will die within 3 years @ that voltage, assuming normal cooling & normal voltage of 1.2 or 1.3 volts. If your cpu dies in 5 years depends on your usage.Use it for office? Only 1x per week for 4 hours? It will last 10 years. But use it for heavy gaming & transcoding/encoding etc & e.g. use it for 8-10 hours per day & it'll fail within 5 years. After 4 years your rig will become instable. It happened to me & i found out it was the cpu now needing 1.0 volts instead of 0.85...And once i noticed this degradation, i stopped using that Q6600-processor. So remember: Q6600 is produced @ 45nm, runs only @ 3 Ghz (max, lol) & required only 0.85 volts. Compared to your 14nm-cpu running @ 5 Ghz, requiring 1.26 volts. lol. That's a difference like night & day.

+Walther Penne uhm you know that my cpu voltage is at 1.264v? I reinstalled windows yesterday through a driver problem. I have 1211cb now. Electron migration does not work in the way you explained it. Btw. 1.264v locked does not cause Electromigration in less than 10 years.

It might just be because your cpu has aged dude...It´s your own Problem if you oc your cpu to the max and then it´s your own stupidity if you don`t know what happens to a cpu, if you clock it to 5 Ghz and give it the necessary voltage to operate at that Speed.Don`t know what happens? Electrons migrate, dude. It kills your processor more and more. The same i noticed years ago on a Q6600-cpu which ran 24/7 @ 3 Ghz. After 5 years, it has become slower dude. Much slower.OC kills a cpu. And "Kililng" doesn´t necessarily mean it kills your cpu instantly aka, making it non-functioning.No sir. Killing also includes making your cpu slower and slower and slower. You can Google "transistor-aging" and aging happens much faster with MORE GHZ (that´s why no 10 Ghz processor exists. Because it´s Transistors would last 1 week and then stop functioning!). And it happens way faster with more heat. How much heat did your processor have all those years? And it also happens if you give it more voltage because of OC and/or undervolt it. Aging of a processor is especially noticeable in today´s Notebooks. In your case, your processor has become 200 Mhz slower. Which means you`ll get same Performance ONLY if you adjust the clock to 200 Mhz more.Like i said: Each mhz more kills yur cpu faster, since more electrons are flowing through it. So it will die faster now than 1 year when it ran with "only" 4.9 Ghz. now you´re above 5 Ghz. A typical x86-cpu of today won`t last much longer with it´s most Performance @ 5 Ghz then 3 years dude. Because it´s made in tiny structures. This means it´s cheap. This means you use LESSER parts to built it essentially. This means less materials can get carried away. This means advanced electronmigration kills your cpu pretty fast. While 10 years ago with that Q6600 even after 5 years i only had that performance-drop but it still worked well and fast with it´s Standard of 2.4 Ghz. Today´s it´s not that easy to just take 1 Ghz away and make it last much longer. Since it won´t.Your cpu will last much much lesser than a Q6600 from 10 years ago, which was built in 65/45nm.Your cpu is built at 16nm dude. More than 3x lesser materials. 3x lessre atom-structures. Many times smaller Transistors.

Hey Jay, I have known this for a long time, this is how I save cash on used parts, I have servers the dell R710 I paid 100 bucks for it, I just Maxed out the cpus with with used cpus, 8 of the 140 gig 15,000 rpm drives for 10 bucks each I found ebay used, and added A gpu, I have 64 gigs used ram in it, less than 400 bucks for 5,000 server in that config that is 5 years old

Hey we need more details here. Please post the microcode revisions loaded for both the before and after tests. You can make a custom BIOS with an older microcode revision and disable windows 10 spectre/meltdown patches too. Jay would you like me to email you etc about this, I have looked into this in some detail and can tell you how to easily do back to back comparisons without reinstalling the OS - just changing a couple of files and registry entries and rebooting

A question, did you update the firmware as well? Maybe I missed it but it appeared you just applied MS patches.
