BATTLEFIELD V and RTX ON... Performance TESTED

Seems like many people ignored the fact that I said that if you dont care for this tech, then 20 series cards arent for you. I plan to do this again using the 2080 and 2070, which based on this performance would be completely unplayable even at DRX low. The crappy thing is that 10 series cards will be gone soon and you will have no choice but to buy 20 series cards if you want a new card, or take chances with a used card.

+jabroni6199 I've watched enough of Jay's (and Steve/GN's, and Linus's) videos to know that the numbers don't lie, and RTX/DXR, although cool when it works, is not ready for mainstream gaming. When presented with a choice of 40-70FPS and super realistic reflections, vs 120+ FPS and "close enough" reflections, I'm going to go for FPS every time, especially if I paid $1500+ just for a single GPU. I am interested in seeing how this technology develops, in both hardware and software, but real-time ray tracing is currently in its infancy, and very lackluster to us consumers.

I’ve watched enough of your videos to know you’re not dumb enough to think people don’t want this tech so that only leaves you being an nvidia shill to “ignore the fact” that what people don’t care for is the cost.

Apart from the price, and that I'm still rocking a 1070, the reasons to NOT get an RTX card are two-fold for me: 1. No support in games, or at least none that I care to play. 2. First generation tech that should only get better with future RTX releases. Gamers Nexus did a really good vid on the flaws in BF5's DXR implementation, and showed how the reflections can get very noisy very quickly. I'm definitely on your side about the technology of it though, Jay. I remember the first time I saw well-optimised real-time "reflections", in Max Payne 2. I am interested to see what nVidia does to improve RT performance in the future, and excited at the long-term prospects for immersive experience gaming, VR, and "games are art" titles.

I don't give a flat fuck about people nick picking stupid shit just so they can puff out their internet warrior chests. What I do care about is Jay being the first person I have seen do a great job of showing off exactly what this new tech in graphics cards really can do. And honestly its something I never really noticed or if I did I probably just caught these things but immediately shelved it to the back of my mind. But now that I know what to look for and the difference this makes. Its really great to know that this is in Dev hands now and future games are going to be incredible. I feel like we are reaching a point with games graphics that could more really be better? In VR yes of course. Most VR games still look cartoony. But we are now at a point where hardware is so good that we really don't NEED better hardware to have incredible gaming experiences. Whats holding gaming back now is simply greedy Devs and publishers pushing products out too soon and cutting corners in order to make up for things later with in game sales. Anyways thanks Jay for making this video.

Really the kinda thing to make you not want to look back to older tech... although the multiplayer scene I suspect was a lot lighter than the single player (which had loads of trucks and grass and didnt have half the horizon blocked by a building) , so I guess you can still see 30 fps A LOT and real rtx gaming will be a thing for the 2180 ti or whatever they call it.

most of the "rtx haters" dont understand it. like all of them complain about the performance loss while rtx never claimed to get you the exact same fps. but instead , it gives you a different performance / quality ratio. try to get these reflections with a rasterizer and gasp at 5 fps. put rtx on low , have a quality thats unrivaled by rasterizers. thats the difference, said this all along.

Jay I'm sorry but your "online works better" is bogus. You were in a uninhabited environment, with nothing being shot, less random particles, less water/puddles, overall a less cluttered scene, so sure, fps will be decent. Why didn't you go to an area full of players shooting at each other? If we are doing a fair test, shouldn't all maps be tested for a standard match, closer to the actual user experience? The tech is great and it's amazing to see how far we've come, but it's a shame to pay 1.1k+ only to get 30ish frames seeing as this was the big marketing push. I'm sure in 4 year we will have at least 4 titles that have RTX functionality and cards that can run it at reasonable frame rate.

So like everything else in PC gaming, it depends almost entirely on the type of experience you want to invest in. If you want higher performance, RTX off but if you want high graphical fidelity, borderline cinematic experience RTX on. No one is right or wrong here. All the negativity I've seen surrounding RTX is honestly exhausting. Obviously with time and investment RTX technology will improve. Has it been released "too early?" Well, who can really say because frankly, this tech has been in the works for a decade now. You can call it undercooked but at some point, the only real way to determine the marketability of something is to release it and make improvements based on that. If you don't want to buy it that's perfectly fine but don't go around calling people who do get it shills or morons if they do. It's their money and their time they're investing not yours. Just because you want a certain experience doesn't mean everyone wants the same thing.

Easy to forget that 4K was pretty much unusable at the start to, still struggling to get 120Hz monitors for it. Jay isn't wrong, if your playing competitively your not playing in 4K, hell even 1440p is questionable unless your able to pull the full 150 FPS needed to make use of the 144Hz monitor, Personally I think Nvidia rushed this a bit, but i get the issue, Nvidia doesn't make the monitors, so they cant push things like 144Hz 4K, if they want to make a breakthrough in graphics fidelity they have to do it with GPU's, and RT or DLSS was the next logical step. Just think they rushed it a bit. The only argument anyone has made that makes sense here is the 2080Ti, as most folks wont be going past a 2080. That being said, 2070 and 2080's are both perfectly good gaming cards without RTX on. Personally I wont be using it, cause I just dont care that much. I wanted better performance in all games and so dropped the $$$ for a 2080 Ti. It is WELL WORTH IT TO ME. Every game plays better. If it's too expensive for you then just look away. Move on with your life and wait it out. But don't bash the tech. Your negativity will just hinder the progress. If so many people are crying about it why would developers spend the money to produce? @JayzTwoCents I think the negative comments come from a price perspective. Yeah, it's cool tech, but is it 3x dollar for a diminished overall experience worth it? NVidia been quietly extorting consumers for years and wanting 1500 dollars for this is absurd and as long as you and other reviewers cosign it, the 2170 will be 1500 and the 2180ti will be 2000 along with a 800 dollar "entry level" 2160. I had hopes for Vega which turned out bunk due to internals and my hopes for navi are non-existent, so it's up to consumers to take a stance. RTX is a spit in the face of PC gamers. We're being punished because Nvidia banked on Crypto for a fast income boost which and it fell through. Nvidia hates us.

BTW, a game such as COD Black Ops 4 renders the screen space reflections so that your own hands and gun do not remove the reflections from the water on ground at all! So I think they do it somehow more cleverly than many other games. I see the reflections disappearing in other games though, like FO76 and WoW, when something gets on their way, as was demonstrated in this video. BTW, love idea of ray tracing coming into games. Wanted that since I first tinkered around 3D Studio R2 on a 486/66MHz. :) Nvidia's real-time implementation still needs to mature more and game developers could use it in more limited parts of the scene for better FPS to satisfy more people. But still, I love the fact that some effort is finally put to this on commercial scale.

For me this looks nothing more like a mirrored copy of the world. This would explain the frame drop. The light being raytraced has nothing actually todo with the "reflection" of the water. If i have to render the scene twice while the water is a mirror of the entire scene than thats whats happening here. Only the light itself is raytraced because before you had to render the light onto the texture while now you just calculate every ray in realtime. Oblivion used "reflective" water years ago by copying parts of the scene as a mirror onto the surface of the water plate in lower polygon count.

All I read are whiners in the comments... If you like the 1080 then you are okay with zero ray tracing and good fps. If you don't care about ray tracing and only good fps, just disable ray trace and use the 2080's speed for better than 1080 fps. At least you will have the option to switch it on/off and experience better ray tracing in the future with better drivers. I sense the real reason for the whining is the 1080 investment a lot of people spent who want to make themselves feel better by acknowledging the card as a 'mega-flop'. (no pun intended)

You literally went from 150 to 50 fps. I don't care about how "advanced" this technological improvement is at that cost. YES it is amazing, but it's so not ready yet. The fact they talk about it as a selling point like it's the next best thing it's just fucking stupid. There is a reason Crysis meme exists. And it's because of this. Doing things that are always ahead of time and can't be enjoyed as they were thought of. What is the point of getting literally the best/fastest GPU if you can't use it for what it's aimed for? Can't the 1080Ti play this at ultra at 1080p? Maybe even the 1080 or 1070 at high for sure... and at least you don't waste 1000 dollars on a GPU. Nvidia is still the best on the market without a doubt, and I side for AMD, but their ways are just shameful, just like Intel.

You can't go "ahead of time" without trying to push boundaries. Ray Tracing is the next step for real-time rendering that actually looks real. It has to render every light source that makes its way to your eye, which takes significant processing power. To put it this way: If John Carmack wouldn't have "pushed the boundaries" 20 years ago with Wolfenstein, we may not have rasterized graphics as advanced as we have them today....
